1127. WELCOME DANGER (1927).

1126. CAPTIAN SINBAD.

1125. THE BIG STEAL Not in the top level of noir classics, but still pretty darn good.

1124. MASK OF THE AVENGER.

1123. A STUDY IN SCARLET (1933).

1122. ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS Smart movie producers threw anachronistic dinosaurs in with mammoths and sloths. Good move. Amazing how well this did overseas.

1121. OSS: CAIRO NEST OF SPIES.

1120. TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN Skids and Mudflap? Did that really happen?

1119. NURSERY UNIVERSITY.

1104. THE READER.

1103. WATCHMEN.

1102. SHANSHO THE BAILIFF.

1101. QUANTUM OF SOLACE I like this Bond entry more than most. I like the other Daniel Craig ones less than most.

1100. MONSTERS VS. ALIENS.

1099. KING SOLOMON’S MINES (1950).

1098. SWING VOTE.

1097. THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (1929).

1088. MARGOT AT THE WEDDING.

1087. THE FASTEST GUITAR ALIVE

1086. IN BRUGES

1085. WICKED, WICKED What a chore of editing this movie must have been. Not horrible.

1084. TOUT VA BIEN Why do I keep watching Godard movies? Jane Fonda is really annoying in this, too.

1083. MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA (-) Stupid script, relentlessly Poochie.

1082. DOWN THREE DARK STREETS (+) Great idea for a movie. Should be remade.

1081. CHICHI ARIKI (+) My goodness is Ozu a master filmmaker. I’m blown away by the pacing of this flick.

1080. THIS FILM HAS NOT YET BEEN RATED

1079. INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL Some pretty dumb stuff in this one. How did Shia LaBeouf suddenly become king of the monkeys and get them to do his bidding? In ROTJ, it makes complete sense with C3PO and the Ewoks. Here, I just don’t get it.

1078. THE RED BALLOON (+) Don’t think you’re going to get out of seeing this movie without crying.

1077. THE DEVIL CAME FROM AKASAVA Same deal as the other Jess Franco flick I just watched, Vampiros Lesbos,; great musics, not much else. The plot is a bit better here.

1076. OLD JOY Completely acceptable arthouse fare

1075. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (+) I think about how this movie ends a lot.

1074. THE DUCHESS Good performance by Ralph Fiennes. The story of Georgiana isn’t as interesting to me as the story of Gainsborough’s painting of her. Robert Redford, you’ve got the rights, make “The Napoleon of Crime” already!

1073. VAMPIROS LESBOS Some great music, but not much to this other than schlock.

1072. WILD STRAWBERRIES(+) Completely deserving of its reputation

1071. TROPIC THUNDER

1070. CONTEMPT Some interesting scenes, but I’m underwhelmed by Godard.

1069. A GIRL CUT IN TWO(+) I’m a sucker for Chabrol. Not his best, but still very compelling.

1068. HEAVEN AND EARTH Similar to a lot of movies that are better.

1067. CANDY (2006)(+) Tough to watch.

1066. WIFE VS. SECRETARY I enjoy how non-innocent the secretary’s intentions ultimately are. No Three’s Company plot here.

1065. DUST TO DUST: THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF 9/11

1064. THE OUTLAW(-) I was kind of enjoying this movie until Jane Russell showed up. Some really silly music goes too far in trying amplify the comedy.

1063. SARABAND(+) I didn’t know this was a sequel when I started watching it. I’ll have to check out part one at some point.

1062. THE DARK KNIGHT I liked this less than most. The story was all over the place – not as bad as, say, Spiderman 3, but certainly not a tight script.

1061. SWORD IN THE STONE (1963)

1060. DRAGON WARS(+) Jaw dropping in how wonderfully bad it is. The plot is so ridiculously complex but takes itself so seriously.

1059. BEE MOVIE(-) Stupid concepts are abundant throughout the story.

1058. CLOVERFIELD(+) I’m shocked at how much I loved this movie. Yeah the characters are annoying in a JJ Abrams sort of way, but they get what they deserve.

1057. THE BIG SKY(+) Even not at his best, Howard Hawks still made films that are better than most.

1056. SHORT BUS(-) Really stupid and really indulgent.

1055. SILENT CLOWNS(+)

1054. THE BAD NEWS BEARS (2005)(-) No need to remake this classic. Every change was a bad one. The kids that Richard Linklater got for this movie aren’t as good as the ones he got for School of Rock.

1053. WALL-E(+) I think humans are too vain to not program in some way to keep them thin in space. That said, the flick’s brilliant and the first half is stunning.

1052. OLLIE HOPNOODLE’S HAVEN OF BLISS(+)

1051. OUR MAN IN HAVANA(+)

1050. WANTED(-) The conceptual changes that were made from the comic book are deal-breakers for me, but they could very well be what made the movie gross so much money.

1049. ROMAN POLANSKI – WANTED AND DESIRED(+) I don’t the Polanski committed the crime he did because of what happened to his wife or what happened in his childhood. I think it’s simply that people in the upper echelons of show business think they can do anything.

1048. HONDO

1047. KUNG FU PANDA An incredibly great idea for a movie, but simply needed to be funnier

1046. SPIELBERG ON SPIELBERG

1045. THE GREEN HELMET(+) This movie just had to have been part of the inspiration for Tatsuo Yoshida to make Speed Racer

1044. BLUEBEARD (1944)

1043. INSIDE MAN

1042. THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY (1945) Boy does that one shot in color work.

1041. PHANTASM II

1040. IRON MAN(+) Shockingly good. I think the simplicity of the plot and that the action wasn’t relentless helped greatly.

1039. PARIS WHEN IT SIZZLESOh if only screenwriting were really like this.

1038. THE SEVENTH SEAL(+) Deserving of its reputation.

1037. MICHAEL CLAYTON

1036. SEX AND DEATH 101 I liked this movie more than I thought I would after reading the script. As is always the case with Dan Waters, some very witty stuff.

1035. SHOOT EM UP I wanted to like this movie more than I did. I think ultimately, I didn’t care for the ultimate explanation of what the bad guys were up to.

1034. ONE MISSED CALL (2003)(+)
I really liked the idea of this flick and was surprised when the remake didn’t make big bucks.
1033. HORTON HEARS A WHO I was impressed with the GC rendering on the bird feathers.

1032. 1032. PHANTASM IV I like that this movie is a true sequel and not a reboot – it uses old footage of the actors well – but it was just pretty bad.

1031. GONE BABY GONE Too many twists and the casting of Morgan Freeman tips the hand of the plot.

1030. FLIGHT COMMANDER (+) Quite good. My dad had a poster of this film in our TV room (with the title “The Dawn Patrol”) and it was great to finally see the film.

1029. SUPERMAN II: THE RICHARD DONNER CUT (+) Having Marlon Brando back is definitely an improvement, but some of the other changes that were made I prefer.

1028. DEATH PROOF (+) The only thing that really bothered me about both Grindhouse films was having the characters text each other. You don’t have to set the films in the 1970s, but I’d have preferred if they were tougher to pinpoint in time.

1027. PLANET TERROR(+)

1026. DIVA

1025. KARATE BULL FIGHTER

1024. THE BACHELOR AND THE BOBBY SOXER

1023. THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD
with live commentary by Ray Harryhausen, Phil Tippet, Kathryn Crosby
1022. MICHIGAN VS. OHIO STATE: THE RIVALRY

1021. WAITRESS (2007) A good lesson here on independent filmmakers/actore: write a role with a lot of heavy acting to do and then cast yourself in a smaller fun part.

1020. THE THREE WORLDS OF GULLIVER

1019. THE DAY OF THE JACKAL I liked this, but maybe I’m just a sucker for films from this era.

1018. CRIES AND WHISPERS

1017. SAMSON, HERCULES AND ULYSSES

1016. THE STUNTMAN (1980) (+) With Q&A by Richard Rush and Steve Railsback

1015. PERSONA (1966)

1014. ONE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIONS (1961) Very fun. Made me want to go to England and hang out in the countryside.

1013. CHARLOTTE’S WEB (2006)

1012. SURF’S UP (-) Unbearably Poochie

1011. BREATHLESS(1959) You can see the influence on Tarantino – the characters talk a lot about pop culture.

1010. HARD TIMES The Charles Bronson character is too tough. I was really expecting a Rocky III type thing where he loses in the middle and has to get revenge at the end, but the guy simply never loses.

1009. PHOTOGRAPHING FAIRIES

1008. TALES OF THE RAT FINK (+) What a fascinating guy Ed Roth was.

1007. THERE WILL BE BLOOD

1006. INFERNO

1005. THE GREAT GAMBLER I think I prefer the later Mabuse films by Lang.

1004. ATONEMENT + (the first movie I saw in 2008 will be tough to top)

1003. EXPERIMENT IN TERROR (2007) (+) Not what I was expecting and quite good, even though the end was a bit conventional.

1002. JUNO (2007) (+) Great, but I do find the soundtrack more than a tad indulgent.

1001. THE GREAT AMERICAN 4TH OF JULY AND OTHER DISASTERS It’s really strange seeing Matt Dillon playing the Ralph Parker character.

1000. WILD, WILD PLANET Great campy production design and I quite like the intense acting by the hero.

999. THE STAR-CROSSED ROMANCE OF JOSEPHINE COSNOWSKI

998. WHO GETS TO CALL IT ART?

997. PHANTOM OF THE OPEN HEARTH

996. COME AND GET IT (1936)

995. THE LAST MAN ON EARTH (1964)

994. KNOCKED UP (2007)

993. RAFTER ROMANCE

992. DOUBLE HARNESS

991. GATE OF HELL (1953)

990. WHO ARE YOU, POLLY MAGOO?

989. A KISS BEFORE DYING (1956)

988. SPELLBOUND (1945) (-) Lame.

987. THE NIGHT LISTENER More faithful to the book than I thought it was going to be. Still pretty bad.

986. FAMILY PLOT Weak Hitchcock, but still interesting to see him embrace a real 70s style.

985. GABRIELLE (2005) (+) Almost painful to watch this couple go at it.

984. WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS (1956) Good, but not one of my favorite Lang films.

983. SPIDER (+)

982. KARATE FOR LIFE

981. SEA MONSTERS: A PREHISTORIC ADVENTURE

980. GRAND HOTEL (1932) (+) Deserves its reputation and Oscar.

979. MRS. BROWN YOU’VE GOT A LOVELY DAUGHTER Strange, strange film. I’m glad I saw it.

978. PRIVATE DETECTIVE 62 (1933)

977. WHAT BECOMES OF THE BROKEN-HEARTED? Not as good as the original, but still fun.

976. HOLLYWOODLAND

975. THE WILD ONE

974. THE JUNGLE BOOK (+) One of Disney’s better flicks. Very satisfying ending that you don’t necessarily see coming.

973. KISS ME DEADLY (+) Amazing art direction.

972. LITTLE CAESAR (+) I’m surprised how well the movie holds up considering how much fun has been poked at the character since.

971. ACE IN THE HOLE (1951)

970. PORN SHUTDOWN

969. GRAVEYARD OF HONOR (1975)

968. THE LOST WEEKEND (1945) Good for sure, but not the classic many people claim.

967. ICE AGE The sequel got it right: Get rid of the human characters and focus on the animals.

966. SYMPATHY FOR THE UNDERDOG (+) I really like the idea of the movie. A Yakuza boss gets out of prison and tries to take over territory in Okinawa since there’s too much competition in Tokyo.

965. SABATA

964. MY LEFT EYE SEES GHOSTS

963. IDIOCRACY

962. THE TERMINAL MAN (-)

961. THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (+)

960. RABID DOGS (+) Incredible. I loved it right from the opening frame.

959. ASHES OF TIME Weaker effort from Wong Kar Wai

958. BEAUTIFUL GIRL HUNTER I hate to admit that I found this film compelling.

957. BABEL

956. TRANSFORMERS (2007)

955. THE MYSTERY OF KASPER HAUSER

954. PAN’S LABYRINTH (+) I like that the ending wasn’t ambiguous about what was real and what wasn’t.

953. SHOGUN’S SAMURAI (+)

952. LITTLE CHILDREN (+)

951. BILLION DOLLAR BRAIN

950. AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH

949. RATATOUILLE Few people love Brad Bird as much as I, but this film is overrated. The problems with the script weren’t really solved when Brad Bird was brought on to doctor the project.

948. ROBOTS (2005) (-) Really annoying plot.

947. KEEP PUNCHING (-)

946. BUCKET OF BLOOD (1959) The beatnik poet character steals the film.

945. TIGER SHARK

944. STRANGER THAN FICTION (2006) (-) Annoyingly bad. Why did Zack Helm get to have a career again?

943. MOTEL HELL (1980) (-) This film had a reputation in the 80s. I couldn’t get into the tone of the film.

942. ROCKY BALBOA Surprisingly good. There’s a possibility that Sylvester Stallone is a deep person.

941. DETECTIVE STORY (1951) +

940. FEARLESS FIGHTERS

939. EUROPA ‘51

938. JURASSIC PARK III(w/sfx crew commentary)

937. CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED

936. REBIRTH OF MOTHRA III (+) One of the best plots for a giant monster movie I’ve ever seen.

935. THE AMBUSHERS

934. HOW THE WEST WAS WON I was surprised how on board I was with this film by the end.

933. ISLAND IN THE SKY (1953)

932. CITY OF INDUSTRY Falls apart toward the end.

931. THE NAKED KISS

930. RONIN-GAI (1990)

929. THE SNIPER(1952)

928. APPLESEED (2004)

927. INNOCENTS WITH DIRTY HANDS (+)

926. MEET THE ROBINSONS(-) Disappointing adaptation of the children’s book. Yeah, you need to open the story up to make it a feature film, but the ideas here are pretty lame.

925. LA CEREMONIE (1995) + Possibly my favorite Chabrol film, which is saying a lot.

924. THE FLOWER OF EVIL (2003) (+) Another great Chabrol film.

923. TONY TAKITANI (+) I was quite taken with the story.

922. NANCY DREW, DETECTIVE (1938)

921. SAW III Better than part II, but doesn’t touch the original.

920. RUN, RONNIE RUN Some good stuff, but one joke in there was almost beyond brilliant to me.

919. DICK TRACY VS. CUEBALL

918. AN AMERICAN IN PARIS Nothing special.

917. DAYBREAK(1939)

916. TALADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY Not bad. Another great performance by Gary Cole.

915. THE KILLING MACHINE (1975)

914. 300 Some decent stuff, but yes, this movie a bit relentless in its homoeroticism.

913. MIRANDA (1948)

912. PROCES DE JEANNE D’ ARC I’m not sold on Bresson.

911. CARS (-) Pretty lame story.

910. SILVER HAWK (-)

909. CAMP (2003) Simply stunning how ugly all of the actors were in this, even for the characters where the plot demanded they be attractive and thin.

908. OUR AGENT TIGER Maybe Chabrol is best left in arthouses.

907. KEOMA

906. LIPS OF BLOOD

905. 1000 EYES OF DR. MABUSE(+) Amazing how obscure this movie is, considering how influential it ultimately was. I need to see more Mabuse films. One thing I like about the first three is that they do have a continuing storyline even though this one was almost thirty years after the second one, which was eleven years after the first.

904. ICE AGE: THE MELTDOWN Pretty good. Solid jokes – one of the better CG animal movies I’ve seen lately.

903. PICKPOCKET I haven’t seen a lot of Bresson, but boy does he not seem to know how to end a movie.

902. CHICKEN LITTLE (2005) Annoyingly Poochie

901. LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN Everyone’s great except Josh Hartnett. Why are people so stupid as to cast him in this?

900. JACKASS NUMBER TWO(+)

899. CHILDREN OF MEN(+) Best movie of the year. Scorsese has Cuaron’s Oscar.

898. LA RUPTURE(+)

897. SNAKES ON A PLANE Should have been better.

896. JUNK (2000)(+) I like this more that “Versus.” The Yakuza plot is much stronger.

895. A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS(+)

894. THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO I don’t buy the surprise downbeat ending.

893. THE BLACK SWAN (1942) Lots of wonderfully dated, sexist dialogue

892. THANK YOU FOR SMOKING

891. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST

890. MONSTER HOUSE(+) Wonderfully atmospheric. I really felt like I knew that place.

889. BORAT(+)

888. THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE(-) Pretty pointless

887. HARD CANDY

886. UNITED 93(+)

885. CHARLOTTE’S WEB (1973)

884. COMEDIAN(DIRECTOR’S COMMENTARY)(+)

883. COMEDIAN (SEINFELD AND QUINN COMMENTARY(+)

882. THE QUILLER MEMORANDUM(+) Really wonderful. Amazing, bittersweet spy ending. This supports my theory that it’s good to take arty directors or writers and have them do a conventional, genre type movie.

881. FILM GEEK There’s a lot I don’t buy about this movie. I think Scotty would have at least film geek buddies already and don’t think he’d be any kind of celebrity at the end.

880. MOONFLEET(+)

879. ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL The movie is going somewhere and is trying to make points, but the whole murder plotline is just too much.

878. CLERKS 2Not horrible, but not nearly as deep as some fanboys make it out to be.

877. LONE WOLF AND CUB 7A lot of fun to see this rare TV movie conclusion to the popular film series. Not an exact sequel as it retells some stuff that was in earlier movies

876. THREE SUPERMEN IN TOKYO

875. UNDEAD Definitely a good-looking and stylish zombie film, but it’s probably trying to do too much. I was confused by the end.

874. FESTIVAL OF SWORDSMEN(+)

873. KILL PANTHER KILL

872. WHAT’S UP TIGER LILY?

871. TIGERGANG(+) Pure, undistilled 70s

870. WAR OF THE WORLDS(2005)Impressive. Better than I thought it would be.

869. ALADDIN 2: THE RETURN OF JAFAR

868. THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE(+)

867. NACHO LIBRE

866. LOOKING FOR COMEDY IN THE MUSLIM WORLDUltimately disappointing (especially the ending) but I enjoyed much of the showbiz stuff.

865. OVER THE HEDGE Fairly Poochie

864. THE BREAKUP

863. X-MEN 3: THE LAST STAND Pretty bad. I’m not impressed simply when characters are killed.

862. AGUIRRE THE WRATH OF GOD

861. UMBERTO D Overrated

860. CASINO ROYALE(2006) Some good stuff in it, but ultimately thumbs down from me

859. NEW POLICE STORY (2004)

858. THE PRESTIGE

857. CURIOUS GEORGE

856. THE PROPOSITION (+) Wow.

855. THE LITTLE MERMAID 2

854. V FOR VENDETTAPretty disappointing

853. MUNICH

852. THE FOG (2005)(-)

851. SOULS FOR SALE

850. ULTIMATE AVENGERS 2 Good, but not the masterpiece that is the first one

849. WHEN STAND-UP STOOD OUT(+)

848. THE DEPARTED Pretty decent for a Martin Scorsese picture, not nearly ras good as the original.

847. B-13 The action is actually good, but the editing almost ruins it. A real shame.

846. GREED One of the most over-rated movies of all time. Artistic indulgence isn’t always a good thing. When films are taken away from directors who go on a rampage, it isn’t always a tragedy.

845. TAKE CARE OF MY CAT

844. LORDS OF DOGTOWN (-) My wife had a great comment about “American Pie II” and I think it fits here. “Haven’t we mythologized these losers enough?”

843. DOMINO

842. THE STAIRWAY TO THE DISTANT PAST 2nd installment of the “Maiku Hamma” trilogy isn’t bad, is better than the final part, but not as good as the first

841. WHITE CHICKS I actually enjoyed the plot with the Tyrell Spencer character.

840. LAYER CAKE Not bad – you can certainly see why Daniel Craig got the nod for James Bond here – but I’m really sick and tired of Benny-Blanco-from-the-Bronx-esque endings. In fact, it wasn’t very good in Carlit’s Way, either.

839. NARUTO I can see what all the hype is about.

838. ZOOLANDER (with commentary)

837. BEE SEASON (-) Pretty stupid.

836. TRANSPORTER 2 Better than the original, but still not great.

835. ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA AND AMERICA

834. SERENITY (2005)

833. THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (1956)

832. I CONFESS (1953)

831. THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA

830. 16 BLOCKS

829. RED EYE (-)

828. CACHE (+)

827. DATE MOVIE (-)

826. INITIAL D I was surprised by the small scope of the movie.

825. LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE (+)

824. WALLACE AND GROMMIT IN THE CURSE OF THE WARE-RABBIT

823. KISS KISS BANG BANG (2005) I was definitely sucked in by the quirkiness of this movie.

822. THE POLAR EXPRESS

821. THE CALIMARI WRESTLER I never thought I’d say this, but this movie was too silly even for me.

820. THE SQUID AND THE WHALE (+) I had no idea Jeff Daniels was this good. A stunning performance.

819. MADAGASCAR Too Poochie for my blood.

818. SKELETON KEY (+) The more I think about it, the more I’m impressed with the utter lack of plotholes in the story. A great twist that didn’t cheat and didn’t tip it’s hand (which The Sixth Sense did relentlessly)

817. KISS THE GIRLS AND MAKE THEM DIE (+) Best evil genius plot ever?

816. A MAN COULD GET KILLED

815. PETER PAN (1953)

814. SWORD OF THE BEAST(+) Yet another great samurai film that I’d never heard of before.

813. STAGE FRIGHT (1950)

812. THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA

811. HOSTEL I liked this, but after the characters escaped from the Hostel, the thrill was kind of over and there was still plenty of movie left.

810. LES BICHES

809. SUPERMAN RETURNS I liked this more than the X-Men or Spiderman movies, but still thumbs down

808. THE DaVINCI CODE(-) Even dumber than I imagined.

807. GAMERA THE BRAVE I’m very upset that they rebooted the series (again) but this one was still quite good.

806. THE GREAT YOKAI WAR Takashi Miike is very hit and miss with me, but this one was actually one of his better efforts. It got some big (inteneded, I believe) laughs with the audience.

805. NEGADON

804. TORN CURTAIN

803. CAPOTE Very indulgent story. Seems reverse-engineered to win an acting award. Not much of a story for an audience to connect to.

802. HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE I still don’t like HP. Everyone won’t shut up about how important he is, but yet he’s always treated as an underdog.

801. MATCH POINT (-) (2005) Amazing how many people are fooled by films that have a veneer of class.

800. THE LAST SHOT (2004) Some funny showbiz stuff in this one and a strong cast, but it really had very little chance of connecting with a big audience.

799. OPEN CITY (1945) An important film, but not one of my favs of the Italian neorealists

798. ZATHURA This movie doesn’t really work. I think they needed to open it up and get out of the house for a feature film.

797. SUSPICION (1941) (+)

796. FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT (1940) (+) Deserving of its reputation. Some classic set pieces.

795. MARNIE Interesting to watch today. Sean Connery wins every single scene with Marnie. The character would have to be completely revamped if made today. No way someone like Jodie Foster would play a character who doesn’t even get a tiny victory in the film.

794. TYCOON: A NEW RUSSIAN

793. THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN (WITH COMMENTARY)

792. SAVE THE GREEN PLANET

791. THIS MAN MUST DIE (+)

790. SMELL OF JASMIN, FRAGRENCE OF CAMPHIR

789. DUMBO

788. MEMORY OF A KILLER

787. CUBE 2: HYPERCUBE (-) The worst of the three. And I like the other two.

786. FLIGHTPLAN (-)

785. IZO (-) Another letdown from Miike. I’ll say this though, the guy loves to work.

784. 5 X 2 (+) The end of this movie I found legitimately profound.

783. A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE(2005) Good, not as great as some people say.

782. Z CHANNEL

781. BAMBI (+)

780. SKY HIGH (2005) The final voiceover of the film I found almost profound.

779. ULTIMATE AVENGERS (+) I liked the whole thing, but man o man was that fight with the Hulk at the end amazing.

778. SABOTEUR (+)

777. ALL ABOUT EVE (+) Very well done and certainly a landmark character, but I think it was a bit too much that Eve had this dark past. Her incredible ambition is more than enough.

776. ANOTHER LONELY HITMAN Starts off okay, but then kind of loses its way.

775. SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS I take zero amount of pride in admitting that this flick made me cry exactly when it wanted me to.

774. MURDERBALL (+)

773. INFERNAL AFFAIRS III(+) Very uncompromising in how beautifully complex the story is. A much more time-jumping structure than, say, Godfather II.

772. INFERNAL AFFAIRS II (+)

771. SCORPIO (1973) This movie showed me how different Hollywood movies have become since the 70s. Today, everything is set up and is crystal clear and formulaic. In this, I was fooled every single time a major character died.

770. THE FANTASTIC FOUR(2005)(-) I never thought that the Roger Corman version of the FF would have to be considered “the good one.”

769. EROS (2004)

768. CINDERELLA MAN I couldn’t help but think of Quiz Show, when Hank Azaria helps Ray Fiennes out with the Braddock-Baer-Carnera heavyweight lineage.

767. SHAOLIN VS. EVIL DEAD During the closing credits, I thought I was seeing outtakes – but they were all from scenes I didn’t recognize. It took me a while to realize they were from a sequel.

766. THE CONSTANT GARDENER

765. SAW II(-) A big disappointment after the original.

764. LAND OF THE DEAD (2005)

763. THE WRONG MAN (1956)

762. ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM(+) Surprising good use of music

761. HOWL’S MOVING CASTLLE A lot of fun, but not as good as Miyazaki’s last few offerings

760. THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN

759. THE KING OF NEW YORK (1990) Boy is Victor Argo out of his depth acting-wise in the final scenes with Christopher Walken. CW eats him alive.

758. FUTUREWORLD (-)

757. MCCABE AND MRS. MILLERNot bad, but the two best scenes are because of amazing performances by the bad guys.

756. THE BIG HEAT (1953) (+) Wonderful.

755. KOYAANISQATSITrite message. 80s, synth soundtrack very dated.

754. GENEVIEVE (1953) (+) A great movie that’s ultimately about marriage.

753. WEDDING CRASHERS

752. AND THEN THERE WERE NONE (1945) Well done, but it’s difficult not to wish for this story to keep the original ending, no matter how anti-Hollywood it is

751. THE LAST ACTION HERO Interesting to see this movie after reading all the specifics of its hellish development in the book “Hit and Run.”

750. STEAMBOY (+) A lot of fun, even if the third act goes on too long.

749. WHO AM I? (+)

748. D.E.B.S.

747. THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953) Definite non-proactive character problems, but what great sound effects.

746. GRIZZLY MAN (+)

745. FAT ALBERT (-) What a hopelessly bad mess.

744. AGENT CODY BANKS 2: DESTINATION LONDON (-)

743. PI

742. ALADDIN AND THE KING OF THIEVES

741. THE ICE STORM Having grown up in New England in the 70s, I was blown away by how well this movie caputred a time and place.

740. A PLACE IN THE SUN I just can’t believe that Liz Taylor legitimately loved Mongomery Clift. I was sure she would just toy with him. This movie ultimately has a movie of the week type message: Don’t settle for average chicks because hot rich broads will ultimately want you.

739. HUDSON HAWK (-) I don’t mind the tone, but it’s just not funny enough.

738. BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA In seeing lots of current Hollywood movies, it’s quite strange to watch a film where everyone is ugly. Moreover, I was sure that AG was alive. (sorry if I’m spoiling. What a great title for a movie.

737. TREES LOUNGE (+) I really like what genuine losers everyone is.

736. PAYCHECK Could have been worse.

735. WAL MART: THE HIGH COST OF LOW PRICE Some of the arguments were more convincing than others

734. HERO (2002)

733. ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY

732. THE LIFE AND OPINION OF MASSEUR ICHI (+) Am I correct in my calculations that Zatoichi only kills 3 men in this flick?

731. JESSE JAMES VS. THE DALTONS Fun William Castle movie

730. IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE (-)

729. THE QUARTERMASS EXPERIMENT Probably worked better as a series.

728. VILLGE OF THE DAMNED (1960)(+) Great concept. Fun for most of story. Lame ending.

727. THE BLOB (1958) (+) What I love about this movie is that there’s about ten minutes left and most people STILL don’t believe him when he says that there’s a monster.

726. THE DREAMERS (2003) (-) All the talk about revolution and cinema seems to just be an excuse for Bertolucci to justify all the nudity and sex. No problem with softcore movies, but let’s just call a spade a spade, shall we. We don’t read Playboy for the articles.

725. STUCK ON YOU (2003) Not very good. The Farrelly brothers certainly have an odd taste in the scripts they pick.

724. MASTER AND COMMANDER (+)

723. KING KONG (2005) Unlike most people, I think the first act is the best part of the movie.

722. HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN

721. MY WIFE IS AN ACTRESS

720. THE COMEDIANS OF COMEDY

719. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (2005) (+) I think Jane Austin would really like Keira Knightly. I know many people felt she was too attractive to play Lizzie, but Lizzie has no less than three suitors going after her in the story, so she’s gotta be somewhat of a looker.

718. THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE(2005)

717. ELEKTRA (-) Sacrilege. There needs to be some kind of “Project Redlight” to stop horrible projects like this from ever happening.

716. DICK TRACY (1990)

715. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

714. ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13(2005)

713. THE HIDDEN II (-) An insult to the fine movie that is The Hidden I.

712. EURO TRIP Really amazing prop for the sex machine in the club in Amsterdam.

711. HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG I enjoy seeing the real estate prices for houses in the Bay area. $174,000??? When is this movie supposed to be set, the cretaceous period?

710. SYRIANA (-) This movie alleges to paint a detailed picture of what’s going on in the Middle East. It seems quite gutless for it to completely omit any discussion of the conflict in Israel.

709. THE CAT IN THE HAT Pretty bad. Most of the humor has next to nothing to do with Dr. Suess and just seems to be Mike Myers riffing.

708. MEET THE FOKKERS I was stunned that I actually liked this. The stuff with the maid, as well as the stuff with her son all was very well done.

707. THE DAY MARS INVADED EARTH (-) It was a very strange experience for me to watch this movie. It’s set almost entirely on Graystone Manor, a mansion open to the public in Beverly Hills.

706. THE YAKUZA (1975) This is definitely “The Godfather” of Japanese mob movies, while the “Battles Without Honor and Humanity” series is “Goodfellas.” “The Yakuza” goes on and on about the nobility of crooks in Japan, while BWHAH (written from memoirs of an actual Yakuza) essentially says there’s no nobility with crooks and they’re scum even in Japan.

705. STAGE BEAUTY

704. WALK THE LINE

703. INTOLERANCE (1916) The modern day plot is the best of the four. You could probably cut one of the other three and not miss it.

702. SEARCHING FOR ROGER TAYLOR

701. HANGMEN ALSO DIE

700. YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE

699. THE INVISIBLE MENACE

698. THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED(+) Discovering gems such as this is why I try and see as many movies as I can. I was completely unaware of this film and it’s simply stunning to watch. It’s mostly for the visuals, but the story itself is well told and delivers.

697. THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE(2003) Vastly inferior to the original. Stylishness doesn’t serve TCM well since the raw, documentary feel of the original was the biggest factor to the creepiness of it. That said, having Jessica Beil in a semi-transparent tank top was a stroke of genius and clealy was a huge factor in the 80 million + gross of the film.

696. AROUND THE WORLD UNDER THE SEA

695. CAPTAIN NEMO AND THE UNDERWATER CITY

694. VERTIGO The most overrated movie of all time? Some amazing location photography, but come on, this film has really tricked a lot of people.

693. SHOPGIRL

692. EVENGELION: END Am I correct in my understanding that this “alternate ending” to the 26 episode TV show was supposed to pacify fans who were enraged by the original conclusion? If I hadn’t read that I’d assume the reverse. This story is about a thousands times more arty.

691. SPY KIDS 3-D: GAME OVER

690. MATCHSTICK MEN I understand the ending, but felt very unsatisfied by it.

689. VERA DRAKE Not bad, but too much improvisational acting can really harm a picture. Once the cops show up, Imelda Saunton’s performance becomes very one-note and I think that’s a side effect of Mike Leigh’s approach to filmmaking.

688. LEFT BEHIND 3 (WORLD PREMIERE) It was an amazing experience to watch this film while sitting directly behind Kirk Cameron.

687. SASQUATCH HUNTERS A good filmmaking lesson for people wanting to make horror films: trick the audience into thinking you have no budget then use it all in the end.

686. THE GROUP

685. SHOE SHINE

684. SERGIO AMIDEI

683. THE UNKNOWN (1928)

682. EVANGELION: DEATH & REBIRTH I’m a bit confused by the reputation of this anime series, though I’m probably not giving it enough of a fair shot by just seeing the two films.

681. MYSTIC RIVER

680. THE SHAPE OF THINGS I really wish I liked this film more. A story about a mean art school girl should be a real winner for me, but this one felt largely unexplored to me

679. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA Lots of good stuff in this, but I think it’s reputation is largely undeserved.

678. SPY HARD (-) Shockingly bad.

677. KIM POSSIBLE: SO THE DRAMA Interesting how close the romance plot is here to the Lizzie McGuire movie. The lesson to girls is “If a handsome boy comes into your life and sweeps you off your feet, he must secretly be evil. Best that you shack up with your normal boy, best friend.”

676. LIVING HELL (-)

675. REIGN THE CONQUERER

674. OUT OF THE PAST (+) Just wonderful.

673. THE TRAP Third installment in the Maiku Hamma series. Not as good as “THE MOST TERRIBLE TIME IN MY LIFE”

672. WITH MICHELANGELO(-)

671. NATIONAL TREASURE

670. 1 ICHI I enjoyed this prequel more than the original “ICHI THE KILLER.” Lots of interesting discussions about who’s a better fighter than who and why.

669. OCEAN’S 12 Some good stuff in it, but ultimately not that satisfying and certainly not as good as its predecessor.

668. THE SEA IS WATCHING

667. THE LAST DETAIL (+) Beautifully uncompromising ending.

666. TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE

665. END OF THE CENTURY (+) The Ramones are a good lesson about art in general. There’s this notion that being embraced by the public is a bad goal, contrary to producing quality work. The Ramones, as great as they were, really wanted to make it and sell a lot of records. They never did.

664. VERONIKA VOSS (+) I was surprised how much the arty Fassbinder liked to use flashy, serial-like wipes. It really reminds me a Star Wars in that regard.

663. FAT CITY(+) I never knew what was coming next. Not once.

662. THE AVIATOR(AUDIO COMMENTARY) I’ve only seen this movie with the commentary. Scorsese is probably even better at talking about movies than he is at making them.

661. DRESSED TO KILL

660. TERROR BY NIGHT

659. THE WOMAN IN GREEN

658. A BETTER TOMORROW

657. SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE SECRET WEAPON

656. HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS

655. LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU(+)

654. MILLION DOLLAR BABY

653. SHARK TALE (-) A big ‘ol Poochie fest.

652. LEFT BEHIND 2 No Comment.

651. THE LAST PICTURE SHOW

650. TETSUJIN 28(2005) Disappointing.

649. THE MANY ADVENTURES OF WINNIE THE POOH

648. INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS (+) Werner Herzog turning to Zac Penn and saying “This is the single most chaotic production I’ve ever been involved in.” May be my favorite line of the year.

647. THE ARISTOCRATS

646. POOH’S GRAND ADVENTURE

645. SIDEWAYS(+) Boy does Alexander Payne know how to create a time and place. A great, grown-up film.

644. LEMONY SNICKET’S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS A triumph of production design.

643. METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER(+)

642. TOMB RAIDER 2 The filmmakers are trying here, morseso than the first one, but it’s just not good enough.

641. MARCH OF THE PENGUINS (+)

640. COLLATERAL Good performances.

639. BATMAN BEYOND

638. BARRY LYNDON Relentless use of a shot that starts in tight and then has a slow pull back. It gets old about the third time that Kubrick does it, and it is all over this three hour film.

637. ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY Best flim title on this list.

636. THE VILLAGE (-) M. Night Shyamalan has talent, he just choses to use it for evil.

635. GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING visually amazing. Some of the best lighting I’ve seen in film.

634. SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT

633. KUNG FU HUSTLE Not as good as I thought it would be, but the fight at the end is still quite imaginative.

632. STROMBOLI The fishing scene deserves is reputation, but overall the movie is tough to take. It’s very difficult to like any of the characters, but I suppose that’s kind of the point.

631. GODZILLA: FINAL WARS (-)

630. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Pretty by-the-numbers, except for one moment, the Dallas Carter team wants refs who are African American and an African American ref does seem to cheat in their favor. That moment was definitely not typical Hollywood.

629. THE TERMINAL I just don’t buy the concept.

628. GODZILLA VS. MEGALON (In a Theatre)

627. KING KONG ESCAPES (In a Theatre

626. LEFT BEHIND: WORLD WAR III

625. BATMAN BEGINS Some good stuff in it, but it should have been better. Weak plot and action.

624. EL MARIACHI

623. LEFT BEHIND

622. BULLET BALLET (-)

621. FARENHYPE 9/11

620. DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY Better than I thought it would be. Definitely some very funny scenes. During the championships at the end, I get the subtext of the big banner that reads “Go Balls Deep,” just not the text.

619. A BETTER TOMORROW

618. POOH’S HEFFALUMP MOVIE

617. RINGU
Not that spectacular, but certainly a lot better than the remake.

616. CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK Riddick is a bit too super cool in a played-by-a-movie-star-with-a-big-ego kind of way. Some really nice design and CGI though

615. CUBE ZERO Using different actors from the first film neatly hides how it all fits together

614. ROAD TO BALI These are the first two “road” pictures I’ve seen. Lots and lots of jokes. I didn’t realize that Hope and Crosby had different character names in each picture. A good trivia contest would be to match pairs of character names to the right movie.

613. THE ROAD TO HONG KONG

612. SHREK 2 I can’t believe this is the third highest grossing film of all time. It’s got some decent jokes, but is clearly not as good as the first one. Also quite Poochie.

611. ALIEN VS. PREDATOR (-) I find it difficult to take a setup with such built in awesomeness and make a film as weak as this.

610. TEN (+) I found this very powerful. Kind of “Taxicab Confessions” meets “Kramer Vs. Kramer”

609. I HEART HUCKABEES The kind of script filled with REALLY quirky characters that actors go nuts over. Kind of interesting, but just a bit too indulgent.

608. DOPPLEGANGER

607. PHANTASM (1979)

606. STAR WARS EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE SITH (+) I really liked a lot of this movie.

605. HAPPENSTANCE (2000)

604. CRASH (2004) What’s fun to watch in this is that everyone’s a racist.

603. WE’RE BACK! A DINOSAUR’S STORY (-)

602. MYSTERY TRAIN (1989)

601. RUNNING TIME (1997)

600. THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY (-)

599. THE APARTMENT A lot darker than I thought it would be.

598. RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE Better than the first. In fact, I liked the situation quite a bit. Still not very good though.

597. FINAL CHAPTER I was able to find an anachronism in this that I’m guessing few people did. There’s an outdoor scene labled “1970” onscreen and they walk past a vendor selling Mazinga Z masks, which didn’t debut until 1972.

596. POLICE TACTICS

595. THE INCREDIBLES (with audio commentary) (++) Brad Bird doesn’t give the best audio commentaries. He spends too much time thanking the people who worked on each scene rather than talking about what’s going on onscreen.

594. PROXY WAR (+) I think I liked this one the best.

593. DEADLY FIGHT IN HIROSHIMA

592. BATTLES WITHOUT HONOR AND HUMANITY I’m going to try and blow through all five of these movies as fast as I can. I’ve never seen any film where characters are both thrown at you so fast and also killed so fast. It would be interesting to list a body count for the quintet of flicks. Based on a real actual Yakuza memoirs.

591. DOLLS (2002) Visually amazing.

590. AS TEARS GO BY (1988)

589. YU-GI-OH! THE MOVIE

588. SAW I like who the killer turned out to be and WHERE the killer turned out to be.

587. JU-ON(-)

586. FEVER PITCH(2005)

585. TWILIGHT SAMURAI(+) A like how most of the people fighting in this are not amazing swordsmen. Realistic tone and you don’t know exactly how it will end.

584. SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW Needed a better script.

583. INFERNAL AFFAIRS(+) Great setup. A no-brainer to remake. We’ll see if Scorsese comes close to the original.

582. THE IPCRESS FILE

581. SIN CITY Thumbs up, but problematic. Way too much voice over, esp. since you’ve got three stories where all of the narrators have the same sort of hard boiled voice.

580. CABIRIA Amazing spectacle. The scene of the children being sacrificed has to be seen to be believed.

579. ONLY THE COOL(+) A wife doesn’t know her husband is a spy. While he’s in hiding with a female, co spy, the wife learns of his wereabouts, goes to the hideout and kills them both, never knowing of her spouse’s involvement in espionage. Sort of a cynical TRUE LIES.

578. THE FULLER REPORT Great fun, but not the Eurospy classic that it has the reputation of being. One great moment though. The hero is a race car driver and as he’s practice-racing and trying to improve his time he finishes a lap only to see everyone in the pit has been killed. I really didn’t see it coming.

577. THE ODESSA FILE

576. MUPPETS FROM SPACE A lot of fun, but not as great as I was lead to believe.

575. FURY(1936)

574. WESTERN UNION (+) I liked this a lot. Nearly all of the characters are heroic. Powerful, non-sellout ending.

573. THE ADVENTURES OF ELMO IN GROUCHLAND

572. TESTAMENT OF DR. MABUSE Fascinating character. I’ll definitely be seeing more Mabuse films

571. MINISTRY OF FEAR

570. CLONE WARS CHAPTERS 21-25(+) I’m counting this as a movie since I paid nine bucks for it and saw it in a theatre. Can General Grievous possibly be as tough in ROTS as he is here?

569. SUPER SIZE ME Great idea for a documentary.

568. HAROLD AND KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE I think this would have been better if it weren’t essentially a stoner film.

567. RED BEARD The second half is better than the first. I’m guessing this film wasn’t successful, since Kurosawa really started to slow down his film output after this.

566. SPIDERMAN 2 I’m underwhelmed. Probably better than the first one though. If you haven’t seen this one, see The Incredibles again instead.

565. BEFORE SUNRISE What works about this for me is that it takes place nine years later. If Jesse and Celine had gotten together in Vienna when they said they would after the first movie, I really don’t think they’d have lasted that long. Maybe at the end of the day they’re still vapid psuedo-intellectuals, but after this movie, I think they’ll be together forever.

564. NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE (+) I really liked this. Normally Hollywood makes nerds out to be loveable losers who are unjustly picked on. ND gets it right in that oftentimes nerds are their own worst enemy. Not knowing when they’re making themselves look stupid and not knowing when to shut up.

563. PIGLET’S BIG MOVIE I like the Carly Simon songs.

562. DAYS OF BEING WILD (+)

561. DARKMAN (-) It would be fun to cut the scenes of Liam Neeson and his lab being ripped apart with scenes from Kinsey.

560. SHAUN OF THE DEAD (+) Very well done. Very funny.

559. DAWN OF THE DEAD (2004) I like the longer timeline of the original. The mall setting seems almost wasted if you’re not going to be there for a while. Not bad, but still possibly sacrelige.

558. THE BOURNE SUPREMACY I’m just so sick and tired of the bad guys in movies turning out to be someone who’s allegedly on your own side. It was bad enough when it was Chris Cooper in the first film, but Treadstone uber-boss Brian Cox is probably more evil at the end of the day. After 9/11 can’t Hollywood let bad guys be the bad guys again?

557. GARDEN STATE Note. If you’re making a low budget film and you want to get a star like Natalie Portman in it, just write a character who’s almost insanely quirky – just make sure she’s got a great taste in music though.

556. ELF

555. BAD SANTA Pretty one note, but boy is Billy Bob talented at swearing. I know this flick inspired the idea of remaking the Bad News Bears (which will reteam many of the elements from B. Santa), but I didn’t know that this movie went so far as to use music from Carmen as well.

554. LORD LOVE A DUCK Strange!

543. KAGEMUSHA (+)The opening of this film sets up the story about a lord whose first-in-command-and-body-double finds someone else who bears an even more striking resemlence to the lord. They decide to keep him around in case they need him (which of course they ultimately do). There’s a lot of exposition here, but it’s all done in one shot and I’m surprised at how fascinated I was to watch three guys who looked exactly the same talking for several minutes.

552. GERMANY YEAR ZERO

551. FULL FRONTAL

550. ICHI THE KILLER Overrated.

549. SCANDAL (1950)

548. THE LOWER DEPTHS

547. THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS(-)

546. THE BURBS(-) Joe Dante should have had a better career than he has. Getting a chance to make a film with Tom Hanks and having it be only as good as this didn’t help.

545. THE LAVENDER HILL MOB(+) Just wonderful. Best method of recruiting members for a hiest that I’ve ever seen.

544. HELLBOY Seeing this movie reminded me of how good the comic was. Mike Mignola had some great ideas, characters and visual touches. But that doesn’t always translate to a good film. Disappointing for fanboys.

543. DERSU UZALA (+) Obviously an influence on “The Empire Strikes” back. Dersu IS Yoda. Moreover, cutting open the taun taun to survive the winter night seems to come from here, although it’s grass instead of flesh.

542. TOMIE FORBIDDEN FRUIT

541. THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (-) The visuals were much less impressive that I thought they’d be, which is just about the only thing the movie has going for it. The Romans definitely went to the Cobra Kai (bad kids from Karate Kid) school of antagonism.

540. THE MYSTERY OF OBERWALD My favorite review of this was in The Onion AV Club. “what might have seemed exciting at the time now has the quaintness of a Todd Rundgren video.”

539. THE 4TH MAN Verhoven definitely has talent. Even early in his career. A shame he’s not more successful today. I’d like to see more movies by him.

538. NO GOOD DEED (-) Almost every new idea added to the plot of the Dashiell Hammett short story “The House on Turk Street” is bad. Hammett wrote a sequel to this story called “The Girl With the Silver Eyes” and Mila Jovavich’s character is given silver eyes in this film, for no needed reason. This has to be the most unusual way in which I’ve ever seen faithfulness to source material.

537. TOMIE REBIRTH

536. TOKYO EYES Most of this thriller was shot in Shimo Kitazawa, which I have visited several times. It’s a haven of antique Japanese toy stores.

535. SAMURAI FICTION

534. CITY OF GOD (+) Just wonderful. Li’l Ze is one of the best bad guys in recent history.

533. RAINY DOG

532. SHINJUKU TRIAD SOCIETY

531. MY LIFE WITHOUT ME I admit it, I was a complete sucker for this tear jerker. Sarah Polley could probably get my sympathy if she were playing Mussolini.

530. CHRONICLE OF ROMANCE Early Antonioni served well by a melodramatic plot.

529. ZABRISKE POINTE(-)

528. LEY LINES

527. SPY KIDS 2

526. FRAZETTA: PAINTING WITH FIRE No matter what you think of the guys’ art, man o man was/is Frank Frazetta influential.

525. LOVE & POP Amazing cinematography. Shot on video.

524. BRINGIN’ DOWN THE HOUSE(-) I’m not sure which is worse. How bad this movie is or how big a hit it was. I shouldn’t be that surprised. Poochie strikes again.

523. LOONEY TOONS: BACK IN ACTION I really like Joe Dante and was surprised this film made the same mistake as Space Jam. You don’t make the humans the stars. You do it like the Muppet movie and have stars make cameos that serve the plot of the characters who make up the property.

522. SUICIDE CLUB Great opening scene and I love the song “Death Shines All Night Long.” Other than that, pretty silly concept.

521. HAPPY TOGETHER

520. TOMIE: REPLAY

519. MIRACLE I didn’t realize that the Russians played Team USA in an exhibition game three days before the Olympics. Perhaps this was the biggest reason for Team USA’s win over the Soviets in the semis. I don’t care how heavily favored you are, you don’t give the competition a free look like that.

518. TOMIEI’m surprised this hasn’t been remade by Hollywood yet. Japanese horror is really hot now and this film has lots of hot girls in it. Seems like a no-brainer.

517. A SHORT FILM ABOUT KILLING

516. ELEPHANT(-) A great movie until it turned into being about Columbine. One review I read of it described it as a “Columbine art project” which is hilariously dead-on.

515. THE TRIPLETS OF BELLVILLE In all honesty, I was underwhelmed. The first five minutes are the best thing in the whole movie. The scheme of the bad guy is so silly it draws attention to itself.

514. ZEBRAMAN Should have been a lot better. Such a good idea. The theme song is fantastic though.

513. FALLEN ANGELS

512. EASY RIDER

511. THE LAW

510. LIGHTNING BOLT

509. I LIVE IN FEAR

508. THE PASSENGER Not very good. Has the common Antonioni plot of a person taking off from his or her life, but this time it’s from the POV of the missing person and not the people looking.

507. I STAND ALONE Really visually powerful and disgusting death scene.

506. 2046(+) Wong Kar Wai is really at the height of his powers. As a side note, once this gets a US release, if the kiss between Tony Leung and Gong Li doesn’t win an MTV movie award, something’s really wrong.

505. THE BRIDE WORE BLACK

504. I’LL SLEEP WHEN I’M DEAD A bit disappointing. Almost a remake of Hodges original GET CARTER, but with a weaker ending.

503. LADY SNOWBLOOD 2: LOVE SONG OF VENGENCESignificant drop in quality from the first one

502. GOOD MORNING(+) Amazing sense of time and place. Great to see Ozu tackling such a “modern” sotry

501. TOUCHES PAS AU GRISBI(+) Really good. A heist movie where the film starts well after the heist is over.

500. THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES

499. THE QUIET DUEL

498. LEON MORIN PRIEST Howard Stern would hate this movie. It starts off with an office filled with women workers during WW2. Most of the men are off at war and one of the women in the office falls in love with her (very attractive) female boss. Her coworker says “You want to sleep with her, don’t you.” Suddenly, this plot is dropped completely and the woman starts hanging out with a priest instead, with next to no talk about her attraction to her superior.

497. SCHIZOPOLIS(+)

496. CLOSER

495. THAT MAN IN ISTAMBUL

494. BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE

493. POLICEGreat opening scene that solves a ton of exposition problems in a completely organic manner.

492. BRIEF CROSSING(+) I really, really liked this movie about a relationship between an older woman and a kid, during their cruise across the English channel. One of Catherine Breillat’s best. However, the suprise ending pissed me off so much, that I’m pretending that it didn’t happen and that the movie ends three minutes earlier than Briellat intended.

491. TO MAKE A FILM IS TO BE ALIVE

490. KISS KISS, BANG BANG(1966)Wonderfully silly Eurospy film, with a great theme song. Great acrobatic fight scenes with Giuliano Gemma and George Martin

489. BEYOND THE CLOUDS(-) I guess I’m not surprised that so many international stars wanted to be in this pretenteous, almost soft-core film. The name Antonioni can make actors blind to obvious suckiness. That said, the movie looks amazing. If you have to watch it, don’t read the subtitles. The movie gets much worse anytime anyone talks.

488. SOLDIER OF ORANGE(+)

487. CEMETERY MAN(+)

486. IVAN THE TERRIBLE PART II(+)

485. IVAN THE TERRIBLE PART I

484. PULGASARI(-) Bad Korean monster movie, but still better than either of the Yongarri movies. I think the director was South Korean and was kidnapped by the North Koreans to make this movie.

483. IDENTIFICATION OF A WOMAN (-) Pretty bad Antonioni film that has a lot more closure to the mystery than I’ve ever seen from him.

482. SECOND BREATHLesser-known Melville movie. Has a sequence in it that I love so much, I’ve got to figure out a way to steal it for something some day.

481. CITY OF BAD MENReally interesting premise. I wish I could figure out a way to update it and pitch a remake.

480. 300 SPARTANS

479. FINDING NEMO

478. EVIL DEAD 2The only movie in the trilogy that I like, although I don’t understand why Ash goes back and forth from being infected/possessed.

477. LES ENFANTS TERRIBLES

476. ZATOICHI THE FESTIVAL OF FIRE(Z-21)(+) Zatoichi kills 66 people in this one. I’m glad I saw it right after “At Large” since it made me realize that I had just seen a Z film that was below the average and that I wasn’t just getting sick of the series.

475. ZATOICHI AT LARGE(Z-23) Zatoichi kills 46 people in this one. One of my least favorite Z films. Feels like all the plot elements come from earlier films and are done better.

474. UN FLICMelville’s last film. Train robbery involving a helicopter reminds me of Mission Impossible, except here, Melville clearly uses miniatures, making it seem like a Godzilla could show up at any second.

473. KINSEY

472. OCTOBERI’m just not feeling it with Eisenstien. I’ll have to see more films of his

471. FINDING NEVERLAND(+)

470. PING PONG(+) Best sports movie I’ve seen in a while. Two things got to me. 1. The bad guys are very good at recognizing the abilities of the hero. 2. The idea that there are only things that the “hack” can see.

469. WRAITH OF DAIMAJIN

468. THE INCREDIBLES(++) Just stunning. I think it will be a while before I see a movie this good again.

467. RETURN OF DAIMAJIN

466. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND In the middle of the film, I thought I knew how this movie was going to end. I was happy to see that I was wrong.

465. SILENCE OF THE SEA

464. BAISE-MOI(-)

463. LE BOUCHER

461. DISCIPLES OF THE 36TH CHAMBER(+)

460. THE TIGGER MOVIE

459. ZATOICHI’S CONSPIRACY(Z-25)

458. ARMY OF SHADOWS(+) The most unglamorous depiction of the French Resistance committed to celluloid.

457. RETURN OF THE KINGThe best of the three. Still, not very good.

456. THE LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA(+)

455. THE WHITE BALLOON(+) I can’t quite figure out exactly how so much suspense builds up from so little. Really powerful.

454. LADY SNOWBLOOD(+)

453. ONE WONDERFUL SUNDAY

452. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE(WITH AUDIO COMMENTARY)

451. FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE(+)

450. A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS

449. SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGENCE

448. THE GREAT SANTINI(+) Considering the reptuation of this film and how famous the basketball scene is, I’m surprised at how much of the film is spent illustrating “The Great Santini’s” humanity.

447. MEAN GIRLS

446. ALICE IN WONDERLAND(+)

445. MADADAYO(+)

444. CINDERELLA (1950)

443. AMADEUS (DIRECTOR’S CUT)(+)

442. THEY WHO STEP ON TIGER’S TAIL

441. DEUX HOMMES DANS MANHATTAN

440. THE MOST BEAUTIFUL Early Kurosawa propaganda film. Would be an interesting double bill with “Appointment in Tokyo.”

439. RETURN TO THE 36TH CHAMBER(+) Clearly, “The Karate Kid” stole the notion of doing chores to learn martial arts while not even realizing it from this Shaw Bros. classic.

438. THE REFLECTING SKIN Strange nitpick: The big frog the kid blows up is an African Bullfrog and, unless I’m missing something and the movie is set in Africa, is not indigenous to the area. I won’t spoil the ending, but it didn’t go where I thought it would (and should have.)

437. SWIMMING POOL (2003)(-) I enjoy a good mind*&%# movie as much as the next person, but the ending in this just felt monumentally pointless to me.

436. THE IDOLMAKER

435. PERFECT LOVE (1996)

434. BOONDOCK SAINTS Only to be seen on the double bill with “Overnight.”

433. L’ATALANTE I found this “masterpiece” to be quite overrated. I give the marriage between the characters no more than three months.

432. CIRCLE OF TWO(-) The last film Jules Dassin directed. Pretty bad and melodramatic, but after being clothed throughout the R-Rated “Little Darlings,” I was surprised to see Tatum O’Neal going topless in this one. The subplot about the failure of Richard Burton resurrecting his career as a painter is the best thing in this.

431. HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS No problem with Takashi Miike doing a musical, but the numbers just weren’t that good. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by the Southpark film.

430. MY VOYAGE TO ITALY(+) There’s an argument to be made that Martin Scorsese is better at being a guy who knows a ton about movies than he is at being a director. He can speak so eloquently about movies that I didn’t care for that I feel like an idiot for not agreeing with him.

429. SKYSCRAPER SOULS

428. REUNION IN FRANCE It’s tough to watch anything with Joan Crawford and not think of Mommie Dearest, but I think her ego would shine through to someone who knew nothing about it. There is just scene after scene of people telling her how stunningly beautiful she is. My favorite aspect of the film is that once the Germans take over, the wives of the German officers suddenly become the top (who are we kidding, ONLY) clients of the Parisian fashion shops…and nothing fits them.

427. EMPLOYEES ENTRANCE(+) Amazing pre-code film. Great in its own right, but even better today to watch the insane level of politcal incorrectness found here.

426. SOME GIRLS DO

425. GRAND SLAM (1967) Great theme music by Ennio Morricone.

424. ZATOICHI 1989 (Z-26) Ironically, I counted that Zatoichi kills 89 people in this one.

423. THE LODGER (1926)(-) Very early Hitchcock has a total deus ex machina ending.

422. ZATOICHI IN DESPERATION (Z-24)

421. ROMANCE (1999)

420. LONE WOLF AND CUB: WHITE HEAVEN IN HELL

419. SEX IS COMEDY(+) A humorous movie about the filming of a sex scene, clearly the one staged in “Fat Girl.” Catherine Briellat (who made both films) even has the same actors from FG. Ironically, of the two sex scenes in “Fat Girl” the OTHER ONE I found much more compelling.

418. RETURN OF THE FIVE DEADLY VENOMS(+)

417. OLDBOY This much-talked-about movie has lots of great stuff in it, but once the overall plot is revealed, I think it becomes somewhat of a letdown. It’s being remade by Hollywood and, IMHO, a radical re-thinking of it would in no way “mess it up.”
